Harmony Gold Mining has confirmed a fatality at its Doornkop operation near Soweta, Gauteng province, South Africa.
The operator said 14 March that “mine-related material car incident” occurred during the afternoon of 11 March. It did not identify the worker or their job title.
Relevant authorities were immediately informed, Harmony said, and the affected area of the mine has been closed pending an investigation.
“Harmony continues its focus on embedding its risk management practice to create a more engaged and proactive safety culture,” said CEO Peter Steenkamp.
“The inclusion and involvement of all Harmony stakeholders in all aspects of safety demonstrates a unified commitment to prevent accidents through our ongoing humanistic transformation safety journey.”
Doornkop, a deep-level single-shaft operation, is located on the northern rim of the Witwatersrand Basin. With an operational focus on narrow-reef conventional mining at South Reef, the mine has a remaining lifespan of about 14 years.
